Part of being an actor is being able to adapt to any character, and this often comes down to altering one’s body composition. Consequently, they are regularly asked to adjust their appearance for films, which may range from losing an exceptional amount of weight in order to play an impoverished character, to packing on absurd amounts of muscle mass so as to play a herculean champion. More often than not this kind of weight change is needed within a particularly short time frame. Of course, some celebrities alter their body composition to be as healthy as they can be. Some great examples of this variety are presented below.
Mark Wahlberg – ‘Pain and Gain’
Mark Wahlberg, in order to play a member of a criminal organization of bodybuilders (in Pain and Gain), had to build up an astonishing quantity of muscle mass (40 pounds/18 kilograms).
Matthew Fox – ‘Alex Cross’

Kelly Osbourne (daughter of Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne) struggled with weight management for years. In 2009, she lost a total of 69 pounds (31 kilograms) and maintained this loss due to her training in ‘Dancing with the Stars’, and also credits her vegan boyfriend for supporting her.
Chaz Bono, the only child of entertainers Sonny and Cher, is shown here to have lost well over 43 pounds (20 kilograms) from his original 250 pound (114 kilogram) body weight.

Janet Jackson, the youngest sister of Michael Jackson, and a recording artist in her own right, is shown here to have lost 60 pounds (27 kilograms) in 4 months via the use of a balanced diet and a degree of exercise.

Kirstie Alley, the actress and comedian known for her work in the TV series ‘Cheers’, claimed to have lost an astonishing 100 pounds (45 kilograms) through the use of the ‘Organic Liaison’ weight loss diet.
Ethan Suplee, the actor best known for portraying the dim-witted younger brother of Jason Lee’s character ‘Earl’ in the TV series ‘My Name is Earl’, has stated that over the course of 11 years he was able to drop an astounding 200 pounds (91 kilograms)!

She then lost said fat after the film was completed.
Matt Damon – ‘Courage Under Fire’
Matt Damon, a well-known actor for his roles in films such as ‘Saving Private Ryan’, the ‘Ocean’s trilogy’, and the ‘Bourne series’, lost a total of 40 pounds (18 kilograms) of muscle tissue and fat (over the course of 3 months) in order to play a Gulf War veteran soldier struggling with a heroin addiction in the film ‘Courage Under Fire’. He achieved this via aerobic exercise (running 10 miles/16 kilometers) every day and restricting his diet to egg whites, chicken, baked potatoes, and broccoli!
Michael Fassbender – ‘Hunger’
As the title of this film would suggest, Michael Fassbender (known for his portrayal of young Magneto in ‘X-Men: First Class’ and his role as the android David in ‘Prometheus’) lost a ridiculous 40 pounds (18 kilograms) of both lean tissue and fat over the course of 10 weeks in order to play the Irish Republican Bobby Sands; a character on a hunger-strike. He accomplished this feat via the combination of power-walking, yoga, and a diet consisting primarily of berries, nuts, and sardines!
As you can see, celebrities often go the extra mile, whether they be actors, comedians, or singers, so that they can attain their goals. Actors, in particular, make use of methods that no nutritionist, dietician, or doctor would advise!
